Before you get in
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. Everyone wears a life jacket and a helmet, and the safety kayaker is beside the raft the whole way. Being comfortable in water helps at the cliff jump, which is optional.
What is the minimum age?
Eight for Brahmpuri, twelve for Shivpuri, sixteen for Kaudiyala. The kayak school takes anyone from fourteen.
When is the season?
Mid-September to the end of June. The river is closed in the monsoon.
What should I bring?
Clothes that can get wet, sandals with a strap, sunscreen and a change of clothes for after. Leave phones and cameras in the office; we take photos on every trip.
How does the advance work?
You pay a part of the price when you book and the rest at the office on the day. If the river is too high for your trip we move you to a safer one or give the advance back.
House rules
- Life jacket and helmet on, buckled, from the beach to the take-out — whoever you are
- No alcohol before or on the water
- Nothing goes in the river — no bottles, no wrappers, no sunscreen straight before the swim
- The guide's call on the water is final; a trip can be shortened or moved if the level rises
- The cliff jump is optional and only from the rock the guide points at
- Tell us about any medical condition when you book, not on the beach

Shivpuri: where the rafts go in
Sixteen kilometres upstream of Rishikesh, on the highway to Badrinath, Shivpuri is where the rafting outfits and the beach camps are. The river runs between forested hills here, the sand is white, and the rapids that made Rishikesh famous are all below you.

The office is a hut on the highway above the launch beach; the trips go in fifty metres below it. Rajaji National Park is a morning away for the days the river is too high, and Laxman Jhula and the cafes on the Tapovan side are where the rafts come out.

Mid-September to June. October and November have the best water for the 26 km; March to May are warm on the beach and the levels suit the 16 km; December and January are cold in the water but clear. The river is closed in the monsoon, from the end of June.

THE CREW
We grew up on this river. Rohan's father ran one of the first rafts out of Shivpuri in the nineties, and the crew today are the boys who learned to read the water on the beach below the highway. We run the three stretches above Rishikesh — Brahmpuri for families, Shivpuri for most people, Kaudiyala for people who have done it before — with a guide and a safety kayaker on every raft, and a kayak school on the flat water at Shivpuri for anyone who wants to learn. The office is a hut on the highway above the launch beach. We do not run buses from Tapovan: you come to us, we brief you here, and you are on the water fifty metres later.
